Asst. Prof. Cengiz Akkale

Dr. Akkale received his bachelor’s degree from Department of Bioengineering, Ege University in 2006. He continued in the same department to receive his master’s and Doctorate degrees in 2009 and 2016, respectively. At the master program, he focused on plant molecular markers and worked on identification of genetic distance in certain plant collections as well as determining disease resistant genotypes using molecular marker techniques.

At PhD program he shifted his field of study to expression of heterologous proteins in hosts such as the popular yeast Pichia pastoris. For his dissertation, he worked on developing a sturdy expression platform for producing anti cardiac troponin I antibody ScFv for the purpose of making a diagnostic kit for cardiac infarcts. For this study he worked with at Cornell University Food Science department for one year in 2015.
 
After receiving his PhD degree he won the TUBITAK BIDEB 2219 Scholarship to study abroad for one year. In the context of this scholarship he studied at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine on developing transmission blocking vaccine against malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in the bacterial host Escherichia coli. He also contributed to a project focusing on showing the existence of dendritic cells in rainbow trout.

He is currently working in advancing his studies on malaria vaccine and fish dendritic cells.

Asst. Prof. Rozelin AYDIN

Dr. Aydın got her B.Sc. degree from Çukurova University in 2003. She was awarded Socrates-Erasmus grant for two semester at the groups of Cell Biology and Immunology & Aquaculture and Fisheries in the Netherlands. Her MSc thesis entitled “Alteration of the distal intestinal permeability and the endocytosis process in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fed a soybean meal-based diet’’ was defended in 2006. From March 2007 onwards, she continued practicing science as a PhD student in the Laboratory of Microbiology at Wageningen University under the supervision of Prof.dr.ir. A.J.M Stams and Prof.dr. Hauke Smidt. In 2011, got her Ph.D degree on the subject of "Searching for Branched Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraether Membrane Lipid Producing Bacteria in Soil" at Laboratory of Microbiology, Wageningen University, The Netherlands. She worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the same research group, working on the bioremediation of polluted soil and groundwater systems for 17 months.

In 2013, she moved to Adana Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor. From March 2013 to October 2017, she was appointed head of the department of Bioengineering. She also actively involved the establishment of Nanotechnology and Engineering Science MSc Programme. She supervised 2 MSc students. Her research groups consist of 3 MSc students and 1 Ph.D student. Currently, her group is working on biodegradation of stone material in the ancient city of Anavarza.

Asst. Prof. Hatice İmge OKTAY BAŞEĞMEZ 


Dr. H. Imge Oktay Başeğmez achieved her Bachelor’s degree in the field of Veterinary Medicine from Istanbul University in 2000. She has completed her Master and PhD thesis on the subject of detection of food pathogens and molecular identification of toxigenic fungi and evaluation of environmental factors on mycotoxin production in Istanbul Technical University, Department of Food Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Dilek Heperkan in 2005 and 2010, respectively. Before joining the Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor, she worked for TUBITAK Marmara Research Center Food Institute as a senior researcher between 2009 and 2017. She was responsible researcher for the mycotoxin and HPLC laboratories and involved in numerous national and international R&D projects related to the development of analytical methods for mycotoxins, additives, bioactive compounds etc., developing decontamination practices and toxigenic and genetic characterization of main Aspergillus species and risk assessment of mycotoxins as part of a research team. In 2010, Dr. Oktay Basegmez gained 3 months internship in CNR-ISPA (Bari/Italy) from an EU Project (Mycored- Grant agreement no: 222690-2) and conducted a research entitled ‘Fumonisin B2 production and presence of the fumonisin biosynthetic gene orthologues in Aspergillus niger aggregate’ under the supervision of Dr. Antonio Logrieco. In addition, in 2014, she gained another 6 months internship in Kaunas University of Technology (Kaunas/Litvanya) from a FP7 Project (NutraHealth-Grant agreement no: 316012) and conducted a research entitled ‘Biorefining of blackcurrant pomace into high value functional ingredients’ under the supervision of Prof. Rimantas Venskutonis. Her research activities has been around food toxicology, mycotoxins, food additives and contaminants, chromatographic methods, molecular identification fungi, risk assessment of toxigenic substances and she has experience from extraction and purification of bioactive compounds, method validation and measurement of uncertainty.

Asst. Prof. Yeliz GÜRDAL DURĞUN

Dr. Gürdal received her Bachelor’s degree with the first place at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Izmir Institute of Technology in 2011 . Following, she was awarded with Tubitak-Bideb Scholarship for master in science studies for 2 years. She joined Koc University, Chemical and Biological Engineering Department under the supervision of Prof. Seda Keskin and received her master degree. She studied molecular modeling of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas adsorption and separation using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. In 2013, Dr. Gürdal started her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Jürg Hutter and PD. Dr. Marcella Iannuzzi at the Chemistry Department of University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland.  She studied modeling of water reduction catalysts for Hydrogen production by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT), Ab-initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD), and Metadynamics (MTD). She conducted her research in close collaboration with experimental partners in Chemisty and Physics Departments of UZH as well as LightChec (Light to Chemical Energy Conversion) Research Team of UZH.

She defended her PhD thesis in 2017 and worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the same research group for 6 months. Afterwards, Dr. Gürdal returned back to Turkey and started working at SASA Polyester Company as a Process Engineer. As a different environment from academia, she broadened her knowledge into combining practical engineering solutions and quality control investigations of special polymers at SASA. She also contributed writing of project proposals for the establishment of SASA R&D Department. In 2018, she moved to Adana Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor.

Asst. Prof. Özgür Cem ERKİN 

Dr. Erkin received his bachelor’s degree at Department of Biological Sciences, Middle East Technical University in 1996. Then, he completed his Master of Science thesis under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sertac Onde in 1999 in the same departent. The title of his thesis was ‘Growth and development of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in vitro’. His work included optimizing the tissue culture parameters required for growth of sunflower plants in a tube. At the same year he was awarded with Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEXT) scholarship for research students. In 2003, he completed his Ph. D. dissertation with the title of  ‘Development of regeneration and transformation systems in Raphiolepis umbellata L. for the improvement of nitrogen dioxide assimilation by woody plant species’ at Faculty of Science, Hiroshima University, Japan under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hiromichi Morikawa. Between 2004 to 2007 he worked as Assist. Prof. Dr. at the Department of Biology in Gaziosmanpasa University, Tokat, Turkey. In year 2007, he started his research in the field of cancer biology as a post-doctoral fellow in Molecular Pathology Lab, Faculty of Pharmacy, Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea. During his stay in this lab until 2012, he studied various molecular laboratory techniques as well as bioinformatic approaches in cancer research. He then, moved to Pharmacogenomics Lab, Inje University, Busan, South Korea as a research professor to study pharmacogenomic approaches in cancer drug resistance towards personalized medicine. Since August 2013, Dr. Erkin works in Adana Alparslan Turkes Science and Technology University. His research interest is on molecular biology of cancer including cancer cell signalling, drug resistance mechanisms in cancers and alternative solutions to drug resistance in cancers.

Asst. Prof. Dilek GÖKTÜRK 

Dr. Göktürk received her Bachelor’s degree at Ege University, Bioengineering Department in 2004. 
Following she joined to Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Biology and Genetics Deparment. She received her master degree in 2007 under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Yüce. She studied the role of TAF7 protein in programmed cell death. In 2009, Dr. Göktürk started her PhD at the Dokuz Eylul University, Faculty of Medicine, Medical Biology and Genetics department under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Zeynep Yüce.  She studied TAF7 – CIITA interaction in the programmed cell death. She defended her PhD thesis in 2012 and worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the same department with Assoc. Prof. Dr Yüce for 5 months. Afterwards, in 2013 Dr. Göktürk started working at Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor. She is studying on the cancer biomarker candidates, the concurrent effects of nutrients with chemotherapeutics and beside these she is dealing with recombinant protein production.

Asst. Prof. Esra GÖV

Dr. Gov received her Bachelor’s degree from Department of Bioengineering, Ege University in 2010. Following, she joined Kocaeli University, Stem Cell Department which is first special stem cell research center in Turkey (KOGEM) under the supervision of Prof. Erdal Karaoz and co-advisor Halime Kenar received her master degree. She studied tissue engineering, stem cell culture and biomaterial production. Her graduation project title is “Soft tissue engineering applications of human lipoaspirate-derived stem cells on hyaluronic acid/gelatin plasma gels”. She worked as a research assistant at Department of Bioengineering of Fırat University from 2011 to 2012. In 2013, Dr. Gov started her PhD under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Kazim Yalcin Arga at the Bioengineering Department of Marmara University, Istanbul and to work as a research assistant in Marmara University. She specialized in systems biology, bioinformatics and computational biology unlike wet lab studies. She got her Ph.D degree on the subject of  "Systems Biology approaches to identify novel biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutics in ovarian cancer”. She studied mostly biomarker identification of diseases via holistic systems medicine perspective. In 2017, she moved to Adana Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor. Her research groups consist of 3 MSc students. Currently, her group is working on autoimmune diseases and cancer throught Network medicine perspective.

Asst. Prof. Zeynep İYİGÜNDOĞDU

Dr. İyigündoğdu received her Bachlor’s degree at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Yeditepe University with YÖK scholarship in 2008. Following, she continued integrated PhD programme of Chemical  Engineering Department at Yeditepe University under the supervision of Prof. Nurcan Baç and Prof. Fikrettin Şahin. She worked as a research assistant at Department of Chemical Engineering at Yeditepe University between 2008 and  2010. Afterwards, she worked as a project asistant for SANTEZ project titled “Developing Hygienic Washing Methods Using Less Detergent and Energy for Washing Machines” between 2010 and 2013. She recieved her PhD degree in 2013. Her graduation project title is “Developing Antimicrobial Surface Using Ion-Exchanged Zeolites”. She worked as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Yeditepe University, Department of Genetics and Bioengineering between 2013 and 2016. Some of her study topics are developing novel antimicrobial materials, antimicrobial formulations, modification of surfaces, antimicrobial activity, zeolites, and boron mineral. In 2016, she joined Chemical Engineering Department of the Adana Science and Technology University as an assistant professor. One year later, in 2017, she started working at the Bioengineering Department of the same university.

Asst. Prof. Sibel ÖZDAŞ 
(Deputy Head of Department)

Dr. Özdaş received her Bachelor’s degree with the first place at the Department of, Biology – Faculty of Science, Çukurova University, Adana – Turkey in 2003. She started her MSc education under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gülendam Bozdayı in Medical Microbiology Department – Institute of Health Sciences – Gazi University – Ankara – Turkey in 2007. She studied Bacteria, Fungi, Parasites, Viruses Epidemiology, PCR, Real–Time PCR, Microscopy, Biochemical Tests, Gel electrophoresis and Basic Molecular Technics. Her thesis was named “Diagnosing Human Papillomavirus and Human Papillomavirus Type 16 by Real–Time PCR in Patient Undergone to Colposcopy and Significance of The Diagnosis”. She was awarded by Tubitak-Bideb Scholarship for her PhD studies for 5 years. In 2009, Dr. Özdaş, started her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Afife İzbırak at the Molecular Bıology Department of Faculty Sciences – Hacettepe University – Ankara – Turkey.  She studied biochemistry, molecular biology, genetic, genome, Cancer Biology etc.  She got her Ph.D degree on the subject of  "Investigation of molecular pathologies in SCGB1C1 (Ligand-Binding Protein RYD5) gene in patients with nasal polyposis”. In 2016, she moved to Adana Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor. 

Her primary interest is identifying molecular mechanisms that lead to transformation of normal cells into cancer cells, the development of head neck cancer, dysregulation nuclear-transport, miRNA and assessment of genetic variation within some inflammatory diseases. She is using a variety of biochemical and molecular techniques such as DNA-RNA-protein isolation, siRNA applications, Immunostaining, caspase-activity assay, XTT, MTT and cell migration test, DNA sequencing Analysis (Sanger), PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, Cell Culture, qRT-PCR, Western-Blot, miRNA expression.

Assoc. Prof. Gözde BAYDEMİR PEŞİNT (Head of Department)

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gözde Baydemir Peşint received her Bachelor’s degree in the department of Chemistry, Hacettepe University in 2003 . Then, she started her master study under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adil Denizli, in the department of Chemistry, Hacettepe University, and got her Master’s degree with the thesis entitled “Preparation of Bilirubin Imprinted Polymeric Adsorbents” in 2006. During her master study, she worked in a company called Redox as sales and technical service officer from 2004 to 2006. From October 2007 onwards, she continued her PhD study in the same research group, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adil Denizli. In 2010, she was awarded with Top Cited Articles 2008 to 2009, Elsevier/Journal of Chromatography A. She defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Heparin Removal From Human Blood With Heparin Imprinted Polymeric Cryogels” and received her PhD degree in 2013. Following, she worked as a researcher in Biosensor Laboratory for the development of electrochemical sensors in cancer recognition research for one year at the University of Florence, Italy. During this period, she worked as research assistant in the department of Chemistry, Hacettepe University (2009-2014). Then, she joined Aksaray University as research assistant in the department of Chemistry (2014-2016). She became an associate professor and deputy head of the department in 2016, followed by her participation in Bioengineering Department, at Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University as associate professor in 2017. Currently, she is head of the Bioengineering Department and vice-dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Adana ATU.

Research interests: Molecular Imprinting Technology, Affinity Sensors, Polymer Technology, Biochemistry, Chromatographic Techniques, Biomaterials, Enzyme Technology.

Asst. Prof. Benay TUNÇSOY


Dr.
Benay Tunçsoy studied animal physiology, immunology and toxicology in the University of Cukurova, Biology Department. Before PhD graduation, she studied in Portugal, University of Algarve, Science and Technology Faculty for 5 months in 2013. She received her PhD degree in biology from the University of Cukurova in 2017. Her research is concerned with the physiological and toxicological effects of insecticides and nanomaterials and resistance mechanisms. Current research topics include metal oxide nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, aluminium dioxide, copper oxide and carbon nanotubes. Moreover, she has projects conducted with University of Algarve and Harvard University TH Chan School of Public Health.

Asst. Prof. Merve ÇAPKIN YURTSEVER (Deputy Head of Department)

Dr. Çapkın Yurtsever is highly interested in tissue engineering studies including stem cells. She has studied proliferation and differentiation of different types of stem cells since 2006. She is planning to conduct research about regenerative medicine approaches in Parkinson's Disease, dopaminergic differentiation of stem cells and cell-surface interactions on biomaterials.

She won the first place in Bachelor’s degree at the Department of Bioengineering, Ege University in 2008. Her graduation project was about “Attachment of Rat Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Microcarriers (Cytodex 3), Production and Optimization in Bioreactors”. She started her MSc education in the same department under the supervision of Prof. Dr. İsmet Deliloğlu-Gürhan in 2008. She won Tubitak-Bideb Scholarship for 2 years. She studied “Differentiation of Rat Bone Marrow and Adipose Tissue Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Nerve Cells on Electrospun PCL, PCL-Collagen Nanofibrous Surfaces” in her MSc thesis and graduated in 2010. Meantime, she studied induced pluripotent stem cells at Ruhr University for three months at Cell Morphology and Molecular Neurobiology Department as ERASMUS exchange student. She went to Ankara and started her PhD education under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Menemşe Gümüşderelioğlu, at the Department of Bioengineering, Hacettepe University, 2010. She was awarded by Tubitak-Bideb Scholarship for her PhD studies for 5 years. Her thesis was about developing “A Model of Neural Differentiated Dental Pulp Stem Cells-Injectable Polymer Gel For Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease: In-Vitro Studies”. She started to work as a research assistant at Department of Bioengineering in 2011. She completed her PhD thesis in 2016, in addition, she contributed some other studies differ from her thesis. After she defended her PhD thesis, she joined Adana Science and Technology University, Bioengineering Department as an assistant professor.

Dr. Zeynep ERGÜN

Dr. Zeynep Ergün studied botany, plant tissue culture and biodiesel in the University of Cukurova, Biotechnology Department. She received her PhD degree in biotechnology from the same university in 2016. Her research is concerned with obtaining biodiesel from energy plants via plant tissue culture methods, micropropagation in ornamental plants, cell suspension culture methods. Current research topics include callus and cell suspension culture, fatty acids and micropropagation.
